Dr. Shawn Butler is the President and Co-Founder of MSB Associates. With more than 25 years experience in all aspects of systems development including program management, system architecture, security, requirements development, and testing, Shawn is nationally recognized as an expert in security risk assessment. In addition to her work at MSB, Shawn also teaches and conducts research at Carnegie Mellon University. And she regularly publishes and presents at events including the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), the Symposium on Requirements Engineering for Information Security (SREIS) and OCATE. Shawn first saw the need for a simple, scientific system to determine how, when, where and why to spend money on security needs while working on her Ph. D. thesis. Though constantly asked to invest in security, she never felt she had the data to make truly informed decisions about where to focus her security dollars. Based on her twenty years of operations experience in the military. Shawn quickly recognized the need for a realistic framework for making these critical decisions. So she began developing a system for risk analysis and assessment to help her make good business decisions about security. In 1997, Shawn co-founded MSB Associates in order to bring her innovative approach to other organizations. Today Shawn divides her time between heading up the software development team at MSB, teaching and conducting research, and working directly with large organizations and government agencies to help them decide how best to allocate their security dollars. At Carnegie Mellon, Shawn is focused on developing decision making techniques for security managers and software engineers, and helping those engineers find the best possible balance between software performance and security. With more than a quarter century of experience as a systems engineer and software developer, Shawn has the hands-on skills, technical expertise and real world experience to help businesses make well-thought-out, cost-effective security decisions. And in the process, she is changing the way companies think about their security investments. |
